What is mothsworld.com all about?
It's about anything and everything really. Whatever I happen to find interesting, I may end up writing about it and it could fine it's way onto mothsworld.com.
I have a number of interests including music, movies, sci-fi, playing guitar, computer games, motorcycles, websites, real ale and much more. I also like to come up with a load of half baked ideas and comments on life. Mothsworld.com is basically me in a digital format. Okay, maybe not all of me, but definitely some of me!
Where did the name come from?
The site name Mothsworld.com is a combination of my nickname (Moth) and the name of a book floating around in my head that read when I was about 17. The book was called "The World According to Garp", which was later made into a movie and starred Robin Williams. As happens so often the book was much better than the film, although it was by any means a bad film.
Anything to do with moths?
Absolutely nothing to do with moths, other than my nickname that is. The nickname I accquired in 1993 when I signed onto an IRC (internet relay chat) server for the first time. When prompted for a nickname I was stuck for a moment, then I saw a moth fluttering around a flourescent light. The nickname Moth (or screen name) has stuck with me ever since.
I'm into my forties now (just) and hail originally from Edinburgh, but have lived in the South East, mainly in Oxfordshire and London since I was 18. I'm now living in the midlands, but hoping to move back up to Scotland in the very near future.
More about Moth
I basically set my sights on being a programmer as soon as I left school and joined a small company in Hertforshire when I was 18. This was all on the strength of some knowlege of assembly language having spent years as a teenager in my bedroom writing games on a BBC micro. I was spent the next few years working on ICL mainframes before moving to PC application development and finally as as a web developer.
These days I'm self employed and run a website calld The Weekly Gripe among other things. Leaving the rat race to do my own thing was in many ways the best thing I've done, however, there are a few downsides to it all. On the plus side I get to work where and when I want, plus the boss doesn't tell me off for being late in the morning :-)
So there you have it. If you like what you see, please join the site or leave me a message.
