Google Chrome vs Internet Explorer in browser wars
I posted an article around six months ago about Chrome, Android and search, and how Google's services and products were on the rise. Since the latest market share statistics have just been released by netmarketshare I thought it would be a good time to revisit that.
Google's Chrome browser is a real success story for the company. It has been my browser of choice for a while now and it looks like quite a few other people are taking the plunge and installing it too. In July 2010 Chrome's market share stood at 7.16% and at the end of May this year it stood at 12.52%, a gain of 5.36%. Conversely, Microsoft's Internet Explorer had a market share of 54.27% in May, this is a drop of 6.47% from it's previous position of 60.74% in July last year. This means that the market share gap between the two browsers has also significantly shrunk, a pretty impressive achievement I think.
Taking a quick peek at Android (no information from netmarketshare here), you don't have to scroll very far down the news columns to see how Google's mobile operating system is faring against it's competitors. It is quite literally wiping the floor with them. Sadly, I no longer have my own Android handset having lost it last November, but I am looking forward to acquiring another one sometime this year. My partner's Nexus S makes me very jealous indeed! Whilst Android has made the biggest market share gains, Apple's iOS is still on the rise too, with RIM, Microsoft and Palm the main losers. One area that Google's Android seems to be weak in though is the tablet market. Honeycombe, which is currently the preferred version of Android for tablets has yet to make it's mark. Apple's iPad on the other hand is doing rather well and this could perhaps explain that iOS gain in market share.
When it comes to Search Google is still the top dog, particularly in Europe and so far Bing hasn't been able to make too many inroads there. It will be interesting to see how this develops as Microsoft and Facebook move ever closer with Facebook's popularity still growing at a phenomenal rate. It must be noted however, that Google Search has seen a consistent shallow decline since last October and has lost 2.35 percent of it's market share. Probably nothing to be too concerned about, but I'm willing to bet they're watching the situation closely back at the chocolate factory in Mountain View.
The gap is closing fast
I am quite looking forward to checking back later this year to see how things have developed for Chrome, Android and Google Search. In particular I'm interested in the Internet Explorer versus Google Chrome browser war. Okay, that might be putting a bit of a spin on things, but I do think that Microsoft have dropped the ball with Internet Explorer in recent years. Their latest offering in IE9 is definitely a step in the right direction, but for me Chrome still has the edge and it's all about speed, transparency and solid integration with the Google services I use.
