New in Town film review
When I first recognised Renée Zelwegger in this film (OK, girlfriend had to point her out to me), I was immediately reminded of the large pair of pants from Bidget Jones's Diary - very strange!
New In Town can probably be best described as one of those "nice but predictable" romantic comedies. I have to confess to being a bit of a fan of Romcom's (among various other genre of film) and whilst this one isn't outstanding it's easy to watch, doesn't tax the brain too much and will leave you with a smile. What else can you ask for?
Here's a very quick summary of what this film's about for those who haven't seen it. Renée plays a hot shot business chick from Miami called Lucy. Unfortunately for Lucy, she pulled the short straw and sent to small town in Minnesota to downsize and mechanise the local cake factory (I think they were cakes, they might have been biscuits or something!).
Anyway, it's your typical tale of new gal in town who alienates the locals on arrival and they give her a week at the most. She surprises them though and soon pulls through for the people of the town when ordered by head office to shut the plant down. As you'd expect a spark soon develops between Lucy and one of the townsfolk, in this case the workers union rep (Harry Connic Jr)... and I'll stop there so I don't say too much. By the way, there's a lot of snow and tapioca in this film. The snow makes me shiver, but the tapioca just makes my stomach heave. It probably tastes better than it looks (at least I hope it does!).
Finally, just figured out what this film reminded me of, it was Doc Hollywood... a little bit. It's worth seeing in any case. Nothing outstanding, but not too bad eiher. Just good entertainment.
