Surrogates, another classic with Bruce Willis

First of all I would have to say that I'm a bit of a fan of Bruce Willis movies having watched Armageddon probably around twenty or thirty times now.  Most of his other films have not failed to entertain either, but that was definitely my favourite.

Surrogates, however, was a bit different.  We're used to seeing Bruce Willis in Sci-Fi Action films but nothing quite like this.  The thing that struck me the most after only half an hour was how much this film reminded me of "I Robot" and it wasn't just the fact that it was about robots. There was also the whole lone hero cop scenario where our hero sets out to solve a complicated case.  This probably sounds a bit cheesy but it's good if done well and supported by the rest of the movie.  Surrogates differed from "I Robot" in that these robots were remotely controlled by human beings and of course in this case, they actually looked like human as well.  This was quite a novel idea I thought; being able to take a walk down the street without having to leave the couch.  This was possible because these robots (surrogates) were neurologically linked to their operators so that the person could see, hear and feel as if they were actually there.  The bonus of course was that in the event of an accident or even fatality there would no such consequences for the human.  Add to that the fact that they're stronger and faster... well you can see the attraction can't you?

Surrogates film review (Bruce Willis)The action sequences in this film are very good and the  special effects (what there are) have been carefully thought and integrated into the story seamlessly. I would say though that the plot was a little thin in places and the story was perhaps somewhat too predictable for my tastes.  There's nothing wrong with that I suppose, sometimes it's good to just switch off and passively watch a film.  This doesn't usually happen with a Bruce Willis flick though and to his credit he was every bit the top of his game as ever.  One thing made me chuckle though, his surrogate had a very ill fitting hair piece and it didn't look right at all. This is only a short part though and the hair piece is soon replaced with the familiar shiny dome.

Although I said the plot was a little weak, I was pleasantly surprised to find a little kink at the end of the film.  It doesn't pan out exactly as you think it will.   This is good because we like surprises and it's nice to have something to think about afterwards.  As the credits rolled out I also noticed a bit of "Breaking Benjamin" which went well.  I wasn't disappointed with the film and I'd probably recommend giving it a look to see what you think yourself.  There's definitely a lot of really crap films out there at the moment, but I'm pleased to say this isn't one of them.
