The Guitar film review
I recognised Saffron Burrows from that film I saw ages ago Deep Blue Sea, which in itself wasn't a bad movie. Actually, she was in Troy as well, another great film but I'm not here to do a review on Saffron, I'm actually going to write about a film I saw recently called The Guitar.
The Guitar is one of those films you'll either love or hate, nothing in between (yes I know, another one!). It caught my attention partially because I recognised Saffron and associated her with previous good films and partly because I'm rather into playing an electric guitar myself. Well you know, chicks with guitars and all that, there's something about that isn't there? I happened to be in on my own that evening which is probably why I picked this one and the bottom line is, I was really very surprised to find it a very watchable. I enjoyed it so much I watched it again with my girlfriend a couple of months later.
In a nutshell the story is about a woman (Melody) who finds out she has weeks to live and on the same day, is dumped by her boyfriend and given the push by her employer. We've all had weeks like that right? Anyway, she flakes out a bit and scurries off to massive city loft style apartment and proceeds to indulge in some serious debauchery whilst maxing out her credit cards. During this spending spree she basically gets whatever she wants: fancy takeaways, soft furnishings, ornaments, lamps and let's not forget the odd delivery person(!). Her most important purchase however, was an electric guitar and a series of very large Marshall stacks (okay, I'm seriously jealous now). The guitar was her childhood fantasy and you are frequently transported back to the past to see her standing outside a music shop, nose pressed against the glass staring at a Fender in the window. Now I'm more of a Gibson man myself, but I can appreciated the sentiment. Now I won't spoil the ending or go into any more detail, but needless to say the ending was a surprise and the film kept my attention all the way through.
If you like fast action glitzy Hollywood blockbusters with lots of special effects and huge budgets then The Guitar is not a movie for you. If you need a complicated plot with lots of twists and turns then forget it too. On the other hand if you like something a bit gritty, a bit rough, a bit unusual, like the sound of a rock guitar and can handle a straight forward story then get this film out. You won't be disappointed.
